1/98: The Start of Something New

I'm running a half marathon.

There! I said it. It's official! Right?

I've been tossing around the idea of getting back into running. And the American Cancer Society has this endurance event, DetermiNATION. I told myself it was something I would do... someday. But I was still hesitant to pull the trigger and sign up. Who do I think I am running a half marathon after all this time of... not... running...?

But I did it! I signed up! You can even visit my personal page and see for yourself. So what pushed me over the edge? A couple of things...

1. It's been a long time since I have set a personal challenge for myself. Work does a great job of setting LOTS of challenges for me.... but I can't remember the last time I did something just for me. And I'm in a place where I could use a little personal growth and focus.

2. There is a crazy Zumba cult leader at my gym. Her classes would make a fire marshal cringe - they are that packed! Last week she started class by telling us about her completion of the Virginia Tough Mudder. WHO DOES SOMETHING THAT CRAZY?!!??! She told us that she was bruised, battered, broken and when it looked like she wasn't giving us her all.. in reality she is giving us everything. Why did she do something this insane? Because she didn't think she could. And she proved herself wrong. And we should too.

So today was Day 2 and workout 1 of the 98 scheduled workouts I have between now and race day: March 17. (Yesterday I completed a basic assessment of my "skills.") And I completed it! I went for a 30min slow jog with a set of 7 full throttle, 30sec sprints in the middle. I didn't stop once - despite the asthma. And I'm exhausted.... but I managed to run just short of 4 miles in that half hour and honestly? I didn't think I would last past 2.

Here's hoping I prove myself wrong 97 more times over the next few months. :-)
